What is a Sadie Hawkings dance? Who was she?

  1. Sadie Hawkins was a character in the comic strip "Li'l Abner" by Al Capp. The comic strip took place in a hillbilly town of Dogpatch, and Sadie Hawkins, the daughter of Dogpatch's mayor, was the ugliest woman in town.

Her father, desperate to marry Sadie off, organized a foot race in which the unmarried women chased the eligible bachelors of Dogpatch. Any man caught and dragged kicking and screaming across the finish line before sundown had to marry the woman who caught him. The event was so popular with the local spinsters that it became a yearly event, known as "Sadie Hawkins Day."

Thus "Sadie Hawkins" became synonomous with girls chasing boys. A "Sadie Hawkins Dance" is a dance where girls ask boys, also known as a "Turnabout" Dance.
