  2. It's a blood forming organ early in life and later a blood storage and filtration system, and is considered part of the lymphatic system. It's located in the left upper abdomen just behind the bottom of the rib cage. Removal of the spleen, or splenectomy, can be done for a damaged or diseased spleen.

You can live without the spleen, but it does make you more vulnerable to infection because of the body's decreased ability to clear bacteria from the blood, as well as lowered levels of protein in blood plasma that helps to fight viruses.

The risk of death from infection following splenectomy is highest in children, especially in the first two years after the splenectomy.
