isn't agoraphobia like a fear of trees?

  1. From my medical dictionary:

Agoraphobia: A mental disorder characterized by an irrational fear of leaving the familiar setting of home, or venturing into the open, so pervasive that a large number of external life situations are entered into reluctantly or are avoided; often associated with panic attacks.

  2. Yeah, it's basically a "fear of open spaces" which can be translated to a fear of wide, open places or a fear of leaving the familiar. I've got a case of it where flat, open areas (Great Plains states and large open parking lots, for example) send me into panic attacks if I'm in them for too long. Makes life interesting, if nothing else.
